Urban Redevelopment Revitalizes More Than What the Eyes Can See

Urban Redevelopment can revitalize more than the aesthetic ambiance of a community. It can revitalize a community’s artistic spirit.

One of Orange County’s leading cities is at the forefront of this growing interests in the role of arts within a community: Garden Grove.  Garden Grove is on the move in terms of economic growth, redevelopment,  community involvement, and shaping the next generation of performing arts aficionados.

At the centerpiece of the renaissance is the city’s 540-seat Festival Amphitheater. Garden Grove has featured Shakespearean theater for the past 30 years.  However, as the city revitalizes its economy the theater community is growing too. A new partnership between the non-profit Shakespeare Orange County (SOC) and privately-owned Great Reunions, Inc. has resulted in an expanded performance season.  Instead of a performance calendar that runs only between the months of May and September, live productions will become a part of the community’s arts programming throughout the year.

Emerging and seasoned thespians are pleased. The movement in Garden Grove has been embraced by John Walcutt, SOC producing artistic director. Walcutt is an actor, who has theatrical roots in Garden Grove and has gone on to carve out a successful acting career in Hollywood.  He is featured on the city’s “Re:Imagine Downtown” website, which is the “idea” collecting site for the city’s campaign to rebuild the city with input from all citizens. On the website Walcutt talks about his vision and hopes for the city’s theatrical life. This past year, the city council voted to increase funding to the venture that will expand the city’s art related programs.
