Get Ready for Snow, Say New Home Builders in Southern California: Part I
Nov. 28, 2016
It’s wonderful to run around outdoors during winter wearing just shorts and a t-shirt. The mild weather ranks as one of the top perks of living in Southern California. But if you’re from a hometown that enjoyed four seasons or love to watch holiday movies, you may feel a tinge of nostalgia and longing seeing snowflakes gently floating from the sky to cover a landscape of white.
Fortunately, you won’t have to travel to enjoy such December weather. Not when both Los Angeles and Orange Counties offer plenty of fun with the cold powder. Part I of this series talks about where to find snow in both counties. And Part II describes areas within driving distance that give you a true cold weather experience.
Garden Grove Winterfest (Dec. 3)
Quantity trumps quality at the Garden Grove Winterfest held this Saturday at the Atlantis Play Center, a city park. Enjoy over 20 tons of snow that are perfect for sledding, making snow bunnies and snow angels, and just playing in. Of course, Santa will be around and crafts will keep the entire family busy for hours. Don’t forget to bundle up because real snow is real cold.
Holiday Cheer at the Grove (until Dec. 24)
If you want the magic without the mess, Celebrate The Season at The Grove with their magical snow that falls every night at 7 PM and 8 PM. Since this is one of L.A.’s most popular malls, you can get in some shopping before and after the event. Naturally, Santa shows up every day at his own cottage. Gaze up at the 100-foot-tall Christmas tree while enjoying live holiday music on weekends.
Ice Station Snow Day (weekdays, all year)
You don’t have to wait until winter at the Ice Station in Valencia since snow days happen every weekday of the year during the morning and afternoon. Don your own or rented skates to race, dance, or play hockey on ice, and enjoy hot cocoa. Kids pay full admission but parents need only pay the skate rental fee to join in.
Kidspace Snow Days (Dec. 26 – 30)
Don’t mention the word “museum” to your kids so they’ll have no idea that they’re learning when they participate at this cold weather celebration at Kidspace Children’s Museum in Pasadena. Enjoy activities such as cookie decorating, creating winter crowns, and discovering the natural world in winter. There are snow play zones for toddlers and all ages and every hour, the snow machine at the Pine Terrace storms with swirls of flakes to encourage dancing and playing. All activities are included with regular museum admission.
Snow! Day LA (Until Dec. 23)
Surround yourself with nine acres of winter wonder at this event near Los Angeles. One ticket gets you access to 10,000 square feet of synthetic PowderPak snow tubing, an hourly blizzard with actual snow, giant snowmen, icicle decorated trees, drinks, and food trucks. Don’t miss the light show held by hundreds of snowmen at the Snowman Forest. Spring for the VIP ticket and you get access to the Penguin Lounge and its alcoholic beverages, hot cider and cocoa, a giant inflatable snow globe photo booth, and a Penguin-themed Onesie Snuggie. Register early because this event sells out.
