Organizing Your Closet

When you decide now is the time to purge your bedroom closet and reorganize it, the first step is to completely empty it and give it a good clean. Well…since you’re moving into a new house, that step is taken care of already! Your brand new closet is just beckoning you to organize and arrange it how you like. Follow these steps to setting up the closet of your dreams:

1. When you’re packing to move from your old house, this is the time to really determine what is coming with you. Start the purge on this end and unpacking will be a breeze. And as you pack, organize your items by category…accessories and such in one place, shoes in another, etc. This will help you unpack with ease.
2. Put pen to paper and take measurements of the space. Ideally do this before you move in, so you can be prepared in advance. Remember to measure from floor to ceiling too so you can utilize vertical space with multiple hanging rods, shelving, etc.
3. Purchase good quality and coordinating hangers. Leave the multi-colored plastic hangers behind. Invest in hangers that will take care of your clothing as it hangs instead of tossing it on the floor every time you close the closet door.
4. The next step is to determine if you plan to do a DIY or hire out your storage solutions. Before heading straight to a professional closet organizing company, really think if this is something you can do on your own. There are storage solutions stores that can inspire with ideas and then, if you’re not able to do the work yourself, you can hire a handyman to help. The money saved here could go towards new shoes!
5. As you unpack your categorized boxes (see step 2), start arranging them in the same way in your space. Shoes go in one place, scarves in another. And when you start hanging your clothing, sort those by color. This will make it much easier to see what you have and what you need when the shopping bug bites again.
6. If you’re utilizing drawers in your closet, organize them on the insides, too, by adding dividers to separate everything. Not only will this make it easier to find things, it will make you feel so organized each time you peek into them.
