Provence. The name conjures up images of pastoral landscapes filled with grazing animals and dotted with traditional villages. Such an enclave truly exists in Yorba Linda as a creation of Brandywine Homes. If you’re fortunate enough to own one of the 29 infill homes in this development to come, you’ll be treated to open floor plans, energy-saving appliances, and the traditional craftsmanship that the builder is known for.

And what of the majestic horse you spy not 900 yards from your community? It is no apparition. Horses are common on the El Cajon Trail, an eight-mile long recreational trail that runs through central Orange County. You’re welcome to ride your own majestic steed as long as you do not house it in your castle.

Fortunately, Yorba Linda encourages equestrian pursuits, so you can easily find accommodations for your horse. CRK Training Stable, for example, provides stalls, grooming areas, tack rooms, a round pen and a lighted arena. Farrier services, veterinary care, and riding lessons are also available. 

No horse? No problem. The El Cajon Trail is multi-use, working equally well for humans on foot who want to escape from the worries of modern life. The path is bordered on both sides by expansive backyards full of fruit trees and the occasional barn. You’ll feel like you’re wandering a country lane.

The most convenient way to reach the trail is to park your car at the nearby Hurless Barton Park. Aside from shade trees, play structures, and a horseshoe pit, this patch of green is popular with llamas and their owners who walk the area on weekends at around 11 AM. The heart of the city’s recreational activities is the Yorba Linda Community Center. Here, you’ll find fitness classes, dog training courses, and art shows. The facility also contains banquet and meeting rooms that you can rent for wedding receptions, conferences, and other special events.

For diversions of the consumer kind, head for Old Towne, a charming collection of independently owned boutiques and eateries. Main Street Restaurant has been serving Mexican and Italian food since 1989. Bring a group to try the Six-Foot Burrito. The Winery at Main Street showcases live music on Friday and Saturday night.

The neighborhood is conveniently located. Yorba Linda Boulevard offers a straight shot to the 57 Freeway, which connects to the 60 in the north, and the 91 and 5 to the south. The city’s main thoroughfare is surrounded by supermarkets, gas stations and other retailers to tend to your basic needs. Ralph’s, Stater Brothers, Von’s and Rite Aid are just some of the familiar names you’ll find in the city.

Your kids will spend their days inside the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. The district boasts 24 schools that have been designated California Distinguished Schools and students that exceed county and state averages in standardized testing. About 30 national Merit and Commended Scholars come from the district each year.
